OPALEVI for Education: guide for teachers and students

Each class works in its own classroom clinic: the full OPALEVI product, with fictional patients only. This guide explains how the institution sets up its classes, how teachers run them and how students take part.

Getting started

Once the agreement is signed, OPALEVI turns on the programme for the account your institution registered. The person who registered it is the institution's administrator: they create the classroom clinics and choose the teachers.

Every screen of a classroom clinic shows "Teaching hospital" at the top. For teachers it opens the Teaching page; the institution's administrator reaches the list of classroom clinics from there.

Classroom clinics

A classroom clinic is one class: its own students, patients and records. Create as many as you have classes.

  • On the Institution page, under New classroom clinic, enter the name (for example the course and group), the type of clinic, the departments and the language, and create it. It is set up as a new clinic is at registration, and you are its owner.
  • To work in another classroom clinic, choose it in the clinic switcher at the top of the page.
  • Rename a clinic, or archive it when the class is over: its students are signed out and can no longer work in it. An archived clinic can be reopened.

Teachers

Invite a colleague to a classroom clinic as an administrator under Users, as you would any staff member. Then, on the Teaching page, choose Make teacher beside their name.

A teacher of your institution can teach in several classroom clinics with the same account: in another clinic, choose them under Teacher from your institution and Add to this clinic.

A teacher who also works in a real clinic on OPALEVI uses a different e-mail address for teaching: one account cannot belong to a real clinic and to classroom clinics at the same time.

Bringing students in

Students create their own accounts through a join link. No e-mail is sent, so a class of any size can join in a few minutes.

  • On the Teaching page, under Join link, choose the role students start in, the department, how many days the link is valid and the most students it admits, and create it.
  • Copy the link and share it with the class. It is shown only once; if it is lost, turn it off and create a new one.
  • Each student opens it, types their name, their own e-mail address and a password, and joins. Turn the link off when everyone has joined.

For a few people, the usual invitation under Users also works; each invitation is sent by e-mail.

Role-play

Each student holds one of the clinic's roles: reception, nurse, doctor, laboratory, finance or administrator. They see and do what that role sees and does in a real clinic; as administrator, they run the clinic's settings, services and prices, staff and reports. A join link starts students in any role but administrator, which you give from the Students table.

Rotate roles moves every student to the next role (reception, nurse, doctor, laboratory, finance, administrator, then reception again), so each student works every part of the clinic over the course. Give everyone the role sets one role for the whole class. Students whose role changes are signed out and sign in again in the new role. A student administrator cannot change a teacher's account or open the Teaching page.

Fictional patients

Under Fictional patients, add up to 200 invented patients at a time. Their names fit the clinic's country, and their telephone numbers and e-mail addresses cannot reach anyone. Students can also register patients they invent themselves.

Never enter a real person's details in a classroom clinic. Patient messages by WhatsApp and SMS are off in classroom clinics.

Teaching cases

Under Teaching cases, choose a clinical story, such as chest pain or a head injury, and whether the class shares one patient or each student gets their own. A fictional patient is created for the case, and every active student gets a task with the brief on the tasks board.

Students do the work in the clinic and close the task when they have finished. You review their work on the patient's file and on the tasks board.

Teaching library

In a visit's Documents panel, Teaching library offers fictional X-rays, CT and ultrasound studies, ECGs and documents. Choose one to attach it to the visit. Every item is synthetic, made by OPALEVI for teaching, and shows no real patient.

In a department whose form has an image viewer, such as radiology, an attached study is chosen there: students can adjust brightness and contrast, move through CT slices and measure distances and angles. In a department whose form has an ECG field, such as cardiology, an attached ECG is drawn there as a tracing on ECG paper.

Following the class

The Students table on the Teaching page counts each student's patients, visits, tasks done and days active. Activity beside a student opens everything they did in the clinic's activity log.

End of semester

End semester ends every student's place in the clinic and signs them out. Their work stays in the records. Teachers are not affected.

Start again deletes the clinic's patients, visits, appointments, invoices, files and every other record of the class's work, and keeps its setup: departments, members, services, prices, templates and the activity log. Both ask you to type the clinic's name first.

For students

  • Open the join link your teacher shares, and create your account with your own e-mail address and a password.
  • Sign in on the OPALEVI sign-in page with that address. Your class's clinic opens.
  • Your role decides what you see. When your teacher changes your role, you are signed out; sign in again to work in the new role.
  • If you forget your password, reset it from the sign-in page; the link is sent to your address.
  • Each role you take is a real job in a real clinic, and OPALEVI is the same product clinics and hospitals use: learn every screen of each role while you have it.
  • Every patient in a classroom clinic is fictional. Never enter a real person's details, including your own.
